The Odisha government on Friday appointed Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, a 1990 batch IPS officer, as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for the state.
Following the recommendation of three candidates by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the top position, the Odisha government chose Khurania as the DGP and Head of the Police Force (HoPF), according to official sources.
Khurania, who was previously serving as the Special Director General (DG) of the Border Security Force (BSF) in the Western Command, Chandigarh, was repatriated to his parent cadre on August 2.
The 1990 batch officer, who previously served as the Police Commissioner of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack before moving to Central deputation, brings extensive experience from his various roles across Odisha.
Khurania held key positions such as Vigilance Director and Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner before joining the BSF in 2018. During his tenure, one of his significant achievements was the arrest of Dara Singh, who led a mob that set fire to a station wagon, killing Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons in January 1999. At that time, Khurania was serving as DIG.
He also served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in several districts, including Nayagarh, Jajpur, Ganjam, Mayurbhanj, and Rourkela. Upon promotion to Deputy Inspector General (DIG), he was posted to the Southern Range in Berhampur, among other positions.
As Special DG of the BSF, Khurania played a crucial role in securing India's borders and preventing cross-border crimes. His vast expertise and experience will be invaluable in his new role as Odisha DGP, officials said.
