Hirakud Dam, the world's longest, is set to release its first floodwater of 2024 today due to rising water levels in the upper catchment area. Twenty gates of the dam will be opened today (July 28).
Official reports indicate that 234,334 cusecs of water enter the dam every second, while 33,720 cusecs are being discharged.
Authorities at the Hirakud Reservoir have stated that additional sluice gates may be opened if water levels continue to rise due to ongoing rain.
Persistent rainfall over the past few days has steadily increased the water level in the reservoir.
Rain is expected to continue for the next three days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall in 14 districts today: Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Balangir, Nuapada, Sonepur, Jharsuguda, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Angul, Deogarh, Boudh, and Kandhamal.
The IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall (7 cm to 11 cm) in Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundergarh, Nuapada, and Nabarangpur.
In light of these weather conditions, the weather department has advised residents in the yellow alert areas to monitor the weather and move to safer locations to avoid lightning.
