Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who oversees the Home department, is expected to review the state's law and order situation soon.
Sources at the Odisha Police Headquarters revealed that Majhi has requested DGP Arun Sarangi to present a comprehensive report on law and order, crime rates, and the operations of the police force in the state. During this presentation, scheduled for next week, the specific needs of the Odisha Police will also be discussed. Majhi intends to conduct regular reviews of the law and order situation, they added.
On Saturday, the chief minister met with Sarangi and other senior officers from the state police, intelligence, and commissionerate police. Majhi posted on X, "The Director General of Police and senior police officers paid a courtesy visit. Discussions were held regarding enhancing police services for the public and reinforcing the law and order system."
Sources indicated that at least 25 senior police officers, including Director of Intelligence Saumendra Priyadarsi and ADG Law and Order Sanjay Kumar, visited the Chief Minister on the day. The meeting, which lasted over 20 minutes, covered various topics such as the law and order situation, preparations for the upcoming Rath Yatra festival in Puri, and the implementation of three new criminal laws.
During the meeting, Majhi expressed concern about the large influx of devotees at Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri after all four gates were opened on Thursday. The senior officers assured him that they are working on measures to manage the crowd effectively.
The temple has been experiencing a significant surge in visitors, driven by the reopening of all four gates and the four-day-long holidays starting Friday, according to sources. Majhi also directed the senior officers to ensure that policing is people-friendly, that officers exhibit good behavior, and that the best services are provided to those visiting police stations across the state.
