Tragic Train Accident in West Bengal Claims Eight Lives and Leaves Many Injured
At least eight people lost their lives, and more than 30 were injured when the Sealdah-bound 13174 Kanchanjungha Express collided with a freight train on Monday morning near New Jalpaiguri, according to a senior official from North Frontier Railway (NFR).The accident happened around 9 a.m. near Rangapani, close to the New Jalpaiguri station. The Kanchanjungha Express was traveling from Agartala to Sealdah at the time of the incident.
"Five passengers have died and 20-25 were injured in the accident. The situation is serious. The incident occurred when a goods train rammed into the Kanchanjunga Express," said Abhishek Roy, the additional SP of Darjeeling Police, to reporters.
The collision caused the derailment of at least two rear compartments of the Kanchanjungha Express.
To assist stranded passengers, Partha Pratim Roy, chairman of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC), announced that "10 buses from North Bengal Rashtriya Paribahan Nigam have been dispatched to the accident site to rescue the stranded passengers of the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express."
Additionally, extra bus services from Siliguri to Kolkata will be operational from Siliguri Tenzing Norgay bus terminus starting this afternoon.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock and concern over the incident. In a post on X, she said, "Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, Kanchanjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train."
