The origins of the Jagannatha Rath Yatra festival are believed to date back to somewhere between the 12th and 16th centuries. Various legends and myths surround its inception. One tale suggests that the festival symbolizes Lord Krishna’s journey to his mother’s birthplace. Another theory credits King Indradyumna with initiating the rituals associated with the festival.
Historical records indicate that the Jagannatha Rath Yatra gained prominence during the reign of Odisha's Gajapati kings. Over the centuries, while the festival has evolved and expanded, its fundamental purpose has remained unchanged. It continues to be a powerful representation of Odisha's rich cultural heritage and the profound faith of millions of devotees.
At the core of the Jagannatha Rath Yatra is the symbolic journey of three deities: Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra, and their sister Subhadra. These deities are believed to leave the confines of the Jagannath Temple in Puri and undertake a nine-day journey to the Gundicha Temple, located approximately 3 kilometers away.

Before the grand procession, the deities undergo Rath Snana, a ceremonial bath with 108 pots of aromatic water, signifying purification. Next, Rath Pratistha consecrates the chariots, transforming them into vessels for the divine journey. The Rath Yatra itself sees thousands of devotees chanting hymns as they pull the chariots to Gundicha Temple, where the deities stay for nine days. The return journey, Bahuda Yatra, concludes with Niladri Vijaya, the dismantling of chariots, marking the end of the festival's cycle.
