The Babushaan Mohanty-starrer "Daman" was recognized as the Best Odia Film at the 70th National Film Awards today.
The award includes a Rajat Kamal and a cash prize of ₹2 lakh.
Written and directed by Vishal Mourya and Debi Prasad Lenka, the film was released on November 4, 2022. It was later dubbed in Hindi and distributed nationwide.
The movie depicts a doctor's determined efforts to combat superstitions and raise awareness about malaria among the tribal communities in Odisha's Malkangiri district.
To date, it stands as the highest-grossing Odia film.
The film received widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics, prompting the Odisha Government to declare it tax-free.
At the 70th National Film Awards, Rishabh Shetty was named Best Actor for his role in "Kantara," while Sooraj Barjatya won Best Director for the film "Uunchai."
Nithya Menen and Mansi Parekh won the Best Actress awards for their roles in "Thiruchitrambalam" and "Kutch Express," respectively.
Manoj Bajpayee received a Special Mention for his performance in "Gulmohar," which also won the Best Hindi Film award.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced the winners on Friday in New Delhi. They, along with the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, will be honored by President Droupadi Murmu in October.
Pritam took home the Best Music award for his work on the Hindi film "Brahmastra."
The blockbuster "KGF Chapter 2," starring Yash, was recognized as the Best Kannada Film, while Mani Ratnam's "Ponniyin Selvan 1" won the award for Best Tamil Film.
